Direct homo- and copolymerization of norbornene monomer bearing an electron-deficient triarylborane moiety using Pd(II) catalyst has been investigated to produce vinyl-type polynorbornene functionalized with triarylborane groups. The catalytic system efficiently provided the soluble polynorbornene with high molecular weight and high thermal stability. While the homopolymer showed enhanced fluorescence quenching efficiency in the sensing of fluoride anions in comparison with monomer, the copolymers with low monomer contents did not exhibit an apparent signal amplification effect. The details of synthesis, characterization, and fluoride sensing behavior will be presented. |
