The thermally robust porous bimetallic (NixPt1-x) alloy within carbon framework is prepared by an aerosol-assisted process for high performance catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction and hydrogenation. As-prepared porous NixPt1-x alloy has a robust porous composite structure within carbon framework. The porous NixPt1-x alloy exhibits a high thermal stability of retained crystalline structure at 550 oC, as revealed by thermal treatment test under various conditions (time, temperature, atmosphere). As a catalyst for propylene hydrogenation, porous NixPt1-x alloy shows excellent and tunable catalytic activity (high conversion ratio (>80%) over 80 oC and low activation energy (Ea <20 kJ/mol)) through judicious control of their elemental composition and pore structure. As a catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the catalytic activity of porous NixPt1-x alloy shows superior electro-catalytic activity (0.853 mA/cm2Pt at 0.9 V) to that of conventional Pt/C (0.115 mA/cm2Pt), due to homogeneous alloying of metals and increased accessibility of reactants to the catalyst, resulted from the unique morphology of porous NixPt1-x alloy, having hierarchical structure with high porosity. |
