The primary sources of industrial collagens are calf skin and bone; however, these carry a high risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy or transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. In this study, a novel form of acid-soluble collagen was extracted from jellyfish to obtain an alternative and safer collagen. To determine whether jellyfish collagen evokes any specific inflammatory response, we measured the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and antibody secretions and monitored the population changes of immune cells after in vivo implantation. Jellyfish collagen was found to induce an immune response at least comparable to those caused by bovine collagen and gelatin. |
