Water resistant polymer with adhesive behavior is reported exhibiting long term antimicrobial activities under diverse conditions. 2-chloro-3',4'-dihydroxyacetophenone (catechol) was quaternized to poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMA). Later, to gain antimicrobial effects, the polymer (catechol-q-PDMA) was quaternized with 1-bromododecane (catechol/C12-q-PDMA) which was confirmed by 1HNMR and FT-IR analysis. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) assured the quaternization of the polymer onto different substrates. The catechol/C12-q-PDMA coated substrates exhibited bacterial killing efficiency against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative in aqueous medium at higher temperature up to 60 days. Therefore, the synthesized polymer elusively demands its merit as a potential coating material to protect a broad range of material from microbial contamination for prolong period of time. |
