Fabrication of Carbon Nanotube AFM Probe for High Resolution Imaging Using the Langmuir-Blodgett Technique |

The use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for AFM tip, in recent years, has been studied for various materials. Most of these applications require increased sharpness and robustness of probes. Here we describe a reliable method for generating CNT AFM probes prepared by using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. We synthesized thiophenol-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT-SHs). The resulting SWNT-SHs were found to be soluble in organic solvents, which allowed the nanotubes to form a stable monolayer at the water/air interface. We found that SWNT-SH bundles could be attached to AFM tips by the LB technique. AFM and TEM measurements reveal that the radius of curvature of CNT tip is less than 2 nm. |
