Covalent Modification of Vapor-Grown Carbon Nanotubes (VGCNF) via Friedel-Crafts Acylation in Mild Acid |

As first example, an electrophilic functionalizations of C60 and VGCNF via Friedel-Crafts acylation are to be described. The model reaction between 4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy)benzoic acid (TMPBA) and C60 indicates that the reaction medium, PPA/P2O5, was strong enough to facilitate functionalization of electron deficient C60. MALDI-TOF-MS result is indicative of multiple acylation reactions of TMPBA on C60 in PPA/P2O5 at 130°C. It also suggested that C60 was not chemically inert under the reaction conditions to preserve its original structure with an average of six and half carbons missing. Functionalization of vapor grown multi-walled carbon nanotube (VGCNF) with TMPBA was also successful. TGA result showed that 38 wt% of 4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy)benzoyl unit was attached onto VGCNF. The functionalized VGCNF is farely soluble aprotic solvents such as NMP and has UV-absorption maximum at 294 nm in NMP solution. The acylcarbonyl-functionalized VGCNF exhibited never-observed-before emissions in the UV-vis region. |
