CHEMICAL MODIFICATION OF C60 BY DESTRUCTIVE ELECTROPHILIC SUBSTITUTION REACTION IN POLYPHOSPHORIC ACID/PHOSPHORUS PENTOXIDE |

Adducts of electrophilic substitution reaction on electron deficient C60 with 4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy)benzoic acid and 4-aminobenzoic acid were afforded via Friedel-Crafts acylation in the reaction medium, PPA/P2O5. The reaction condition that we have developed and applied to the carbon nanomaterials such as single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT), multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT), and vapor-grown carbon nanofiber (VGCNF) was strong enough to facilitate destructive functionalization of C60. MALDI-TOF-MS spectrum was indicative of multiple acylation reactions of 4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy)benzoic acid on C60 resulting in average 6 carbon missing adducts (C54) with maximum 6 substituents in PPA/P2O5 at 130°C. |
