Cancer therapy using glucose-sensitive polymeric nanoparticles |

Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. Functionalized polymeric nanoparticles have been considered promising as nanomedicine for the treatment of many diseases, including cancer, as they can be biomimetically designed to recognize cellular and molecular processes in the body. In this study, we hypothesized that phenylboronic acid-conjugated glycol chitosan could form polymeric micelles and the self-assembled nanoparticles could induce glucose deprivation in the tumor cells due to inhibition of glycolysis metabolism. These derivatives formed self-assembled nanoparticles and their structure was varied in response to changes in the glucose concentration. The cellular uptake of glucose-sensitive nanoparticles induced glucose deprivation of the cells, resulting in the decrease of tumor size and mass in a tumor-bearing mice model. This approach to developing functionalized polymeric nanoparticles may be useful for of the treatment of various cancers. |
