Stimuli responsive materials have been of great interest due to their potential applications in biomechanics, medicine, sensors, displays and electronics. Recently our group developed photonic gels which are responsive to various chemical stimuli. Extending the work, we have developed electrically tunable photonic gels. Electrically tunable photonic gels were prepared from self-assembly of polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) block copolymers. The position of photonic band gap (PBG) was changed by controlling swelling/deswelling of P2VP layers with electric field. The effects of quaternization of P2VP blocks on electrical tuning (e-tuning) of photonic gels have been investigated. We found that the behavior of e-tuning is strongly dependent on the extent of quaternization, and two different mechanisms are employed for explanation. |
