Smart gels which are responsive to various external chemical and electrical strimuli have been widely investigated for their potential applications in the fields of biomedical science, biomechanics, sensors and electronics. Unlike typical gels, highly charged gels show unique first order transition behavior in response to change of solvent composition, pH, temperature and electric field. In this work, we report unique discontinuous changes of PBG in PS-b-P2VP photonic gels in response to change of solvent composition. Photonic gels exhibit strong first order transition in PBG when P2VP blocks are fully quaternized. The effects of quaternization on transition behavior and their application towards photonic switches have been investigated. |
