제목 Development of manufacturing technology for Mo-99 Targets with using 8-cavity aluminum plate
초록 Mo-99 is a precursor of Tc-99m which is the most widely used radionuclide for medical diagnosis. Tc-99m is used for the detection of disease and for the study of organ structure and function. Mo-99 is capable of mass production due to its process characteristics. Furthermore, It has high specific activity which means that the size of the source is small, but emits high radiation. For these reasons, the increasing demand for this radionuclide in many countries. KAERI has been developing a dispersion commercial-grade LEU target to provide to the KiJang Research Reactor (KJRR) for Mo-99 production in Korea.
The target used for Mo-99 production is a material containing uranium-235 that is designed to be irradiated in a nuclear reactor. Targets may be shaped as plates, pins, or cylinders. KAERI has been developing technology for the manufacturing of LEU target in plate type. Metallic targets are typically encapsulated in aluminum to protect the chemically reactive uranium metal or alloy and to contain the fission products produced during irradiation. Generally, the one target compact is encapsulated in one set of aluminum, but KAERI assembles eight compacts with one aluminum set at once to enhance Mo99 production efficiency. In this paper, the results and issues of producing targets with using 8-cavity plate in KAERI will be presented.
