We present the first observation of molecular ordering and mesoscale behavior of small perfluorinated rod-coil molecule by using various scattering and microscopy methods. Polarized optical microscopy and X-ray scattering with synchrotron radiation results show this material exhibits typical lamella structure upon heating and cooling. We show that these lamellar domains become aligned perpendicular to the magnetic field direction, with the aromatic parts of the lamellar sheets orienting themselves parallel to the magnetic-field vector. This method can be used to create a grain size in the plane of the film that is much larger than that which can be achieved using surface alignment techniques. |
