Crystallization of drug-polymer hierarchical composites prepared with using Adefovir Dipivoxil as a model drug, and ethylcellulose(EC), hydroxypropylcellulose(HPC) and polyacrylicacid(PAA) as polymeric materials were examined in order to understand the significance of drug-polymer interactions. The influence of polymers on crystal formaion is usually attributed to their selective adsorption onto specific crystal faces. The layer surrounding crystals and adsorption of polymers onto the crystal surface leads to non-classical growth as well as habit modification in the crystallization of drugs. The possibilities of controlling crystal size and shape by polymers which can influence nucleation and growth were discussed. Using spectroscopic, microscopic and thermal analysis, this study investigated drug-polymer interactions and crystal habit modifications of drug. The results proved that the polymer-directed crystallization could be useful in the pharmaceutical research and development. |
