Recently, ceramic-based materials have been applied to commercial machine parts in an effort to improve efficiency and performance. However, it is difficult to fabricate the ceramic parts especially in the case of complex shape. The fabrication of ceramics containing parts has generally been carried out by joining of ceramic and metal. Therefore the joining techniques including surface modify, interfacial phase control are important. We investigated the surface modification and joining method of silicon nitride to carbon steel. Silicon nitride is thermally treated under a nitrogen atmosphere or a vacuum to modify its surface. During the thermal treatment, active silicon layer is formed through the thermal dissociation of silicon nitride into silicon and nitrogen. Here we present the joining method of silicon nitride to carbon steel using this active silicon layer. |
