Size controlled wood chip was used as the fuel for fluidized bed combustor. The effect of polystyrene (PS) on increasing heating value of wood chip was investigated. To increase the heating value of wood chip, the PS was coated onto wood chip using solvent mixing. The ratio of PS:wood chip was fixed as 0:10, 2:8, 3:7, 4:6, and 5:5. The heating value and thermal characteristics of each sample was confirmed using calorimeter and thermal gravimetric analyzer, respectively. From the results, the heating value of wood chip was significantly increased with adding the PS having high heating value (about >9,000 kcal/kg). In addition, the PS/wood chip showed two thermal decomposition ranges, indicating the copyrolysis by interaction between PS and wood chip. |
