We developed the reactive hybrid nanoparticles (rHNPs) to provide compatibility and reactivity with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) pre-polymer by grafting bi-functionalized PDMS chains: trimethoxysilyl and hydride groups, respectively. The bi-functional PDMS chains were synthesized by anionic ring opening polymerization (AROP) of cyclic siloxane with alkyl lithium initiator and chlorosilane terminator, and then attached on the surface of silica nanoparticles using sol-gel reaction. The rHNPs showed high grafting density of ~ 0.066 μmol/g and grafted PDMS arms of rHNPs could provide good miscibility. Moreover, the reactive moieties in grafted arms could link the vinyl terminated PDMS molecules and control the particle aggregation. The PDMS/rHNP nanocomposite showed the significantly increased surface hardness by 63.0% and restoration by 3.8% at 15 wt% rHNP loading. These results indicated that the rHNPs would overcome the serious problems of agglomeration of nanocomposites. |
