Nitroxide-mediated dispersion polymerization as one of living radical polymerization has been mostly studied bulk, solution, and miniemulsion polymerization systems. In the current study, nitroxide-mediated dispersion polymerization of styrene was investigated using ??-Azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxy (TEMPO) with various glycol-derived solvents as the polymerization media including tripropylene glycol (TPG), dipropylene glycol (DPG), triethylene glycol (TEG), and diethylene glycol (DEG). In the absence of TEMPO, monodisperse polymer microspheres in the range of 0.5 ?0.9 ? having the polydispersity values of ca. 3.1 were obtained. In the presence of TEMPO, the particle size diameters were broadened from 0.5-50 ?, however, the polydispersity index was significantly reduced to be in the range of 1.3 - 1.9. The particle size was influenced by the solubility parameter of the solvent. The lower the solubility parameter, the larger the particle size. In addition, the polydispersity index was also found to be dependent on the solubility parameter of each solvent. The lower solubility parameter value, the lower polydispersity index. |
