As increasing the public concerns on the environmental problems, bio-based production of chemicals from renewable biomass has been receiving great attention. However, natural microorganisms have a limited capability to produce the products of our interest. Thus, various technologies such as metabolic engineering and random mutagenesis are being applied to improve the performance of the strain. Since the development of omics and high-throughput methods, traditional technology which had focused on local metabolic pathways has evolved into the technology that investigates the whole organism at the systems-level. We developed industrial microorganisms for the production of biochemicals including 2,3-butanediol via metabolic engineering based on systems-level analyses and in silico simulation.
