Smart utilization of water is an essential element of living creatures on earth. For example, moisture-harvesting is a remarkable ability to inhabit in arid regions. Lizards in arid regions have special skin structures like capillary channels for water capture from rainfall and puddles, and many scientists have tried to develop the facile imitation methods of water capture skin. In this study, we fabricated thermo-responsive composites using poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) and polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS). Our strucutre consisted of PNIPAm hydrogles having aligned micropores and infiltrated PDMS. The aligned micropores of PNIPAm was prepared by directional melt crystallization of water, and subsequently PDMS was infiltrated to the pores of the PNIPAm. We demonstrated the thermo-responsive properties of PNIPAm/PDMS composites, which could be used as water-controlling materials mimicking the natural structures of lizards. |
