Recently, we have synthesized a series of novel thermochromic compounds, 1,3-bis(hydroxyalkylamino)-4,6- dinitrobenzenes (BDBn, n=2-5), and investigated their thermochromic behavior. Among this family, BDB2 and BDB3 show a new type of dual solid-state thermochromism. On heating, they initially exhibit gradual color change from yellow to orange at lower temperatures, which is attributed to increasing distance and weakening π-π stacking interactions between aromatic rings in the crystalline state. Subsequently, at higher temperatures, they undergo sharp color change from orange to red due to crystal-to-crystal transition accompanying the intramolecular proton transfer reaction. As a result for searching for BDB-type thermochromic derivatives, in this study, we report the thermochromism of 1,3-bis(aminoethylamino)-4,6-dinitrobenzene (BaDB), which has amino group instead of hydroxyl one in BDB2. |
