Pickering templated micro-porous alginate/polyacrylic acid hydrogel for efficient pollutant adsorption in aqueous and nonaqueous media |

Economical adsorbents that work in various liquid phases are required for a wide range of pollutant removal applications. However, only a few are reported because it is difficult to synthesize an adsorbent with both intrinsic hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity. Herein, we systematically coated an alginate-polyacrylic acid semi IPN scaffold with amphiphilic phenolic particles after which it was applied as a monolith adsorbent for pollutants in both aqueous and nonaqueous media. High internal phase emulsion polymerization was employed to prepare the adsorbent. Its internal structure and other physicochemical properties were characterized using SEM, FTIR, UTM and Zeta potential. Adsorption performance was studied using methylene blue and quinoline dissolved in DI water and n-heptane, respectively. A highly porous scaffold with interconnected micro and nanopores was attained having an adsorption capacity of ~360mg/g for methylene blue and ~460 mg/g for quinoline. |
