The preparation of a series of sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) copolymers (SPESs) and their applications as ion exchange membranes (IEMs) for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) have been reported. Various SPES membranes with IEC from 1.44 meq/g to 2.02 meq/g were fully characterized in terms of various physical and electrochemical properties, including dimensional variation, membrane resistance, and vanadium ion permeability. Compared to Nafion115, the SPES membrane with an IEC of 1.71 meq/g has a higher EE (75-88 %) and CE (>98%) at test current densities form 40-100 mA/cm2 and significantly larger capacity retention (>99%) during the 100 charge-discharge cycles in the single cell VRFB performance test. |
