Effects of different comonomers in polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based copolymers, such as itaconic aicd, methacrylic acid, methyl methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate, were investigated with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy for the thermal oxidative stabilization (TOS) behaviors of the copolymers. PAN copolymers with neutral comonomers exhibited similar TOS behaviors to that of PAN, indicating general radical mediated processes. Acclerated stabilization behaviors of PAN copolymers containing acid comonomers were observed due to ionic initiation activity of the acid units. Certain initial induction period followed by facilitated TOS behviors was observed for poly(acrylonitrile-co-vinyl acetate), indicating in-situ generation of acetic acid during the TOS. Among the compolymers, PAN-based terpolymer with vinyl acetate and itaconinc acid as comonomers exhibited the fastest and the most efficient TOS, suggesting synergistic effect of the comonomers. |
