제목 | The Status of Women Scientists and Government Supporting Policies in Japan |
초록 | The development of science and technology is very important for the development of an economy. Although the best use of personnel is important, the power of women has not always been utilized well in the field of science and technology. The percentage of women researchers (both in science and literature) in Korea and Japan was 14.9% and 13.6%, respectively, in 2010. However, that of England and the U.S.A. was 36.7% and 34.3%, respectively. In Japan, a gender equality law was established in 2000. The government proposed to hire 25% of women researchers (20% in science, 15% in technology, 30% in agriculture and health) in 2006, and then it was improved to 30% in 2011. The government has now decided the target number of women researchers in a position of leadership to be 30% until 2020. More than 80 universities and academic societies have positive programs to increase the number of women researchers, and established awards to encourage them. Kobe University introduced a research funding system, skill-up fund (attending international conferences and English correction service), mentor system, carrier-up café, etc. for women researchers. Eighteen women researchers have been hired in these three years. Furthermore, an invitation program in S&T for high-school girl students has been carried out over these 7 years all over Japan. |
