Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) use electrochemically active microbe which can reduce solid extracellular materials, and interact with electrode as terminal electron donor and/or accepter. It has been applied to produce bioelectricity and biogas from various biodegradable organic compounds, and in-situ monitoring biosensor. Recently BES process has been applied into electrochemical biorefinery process which target to produce commodity chemicals by controlling intracellular metabolic flux. Therefore the microbe-electrode interaction possibly can increase productivity and yield of various bioprocesses. In this presentation, the recent applications of BES and their results will be reviewed. |
