제목 Single Level Studies of Charge Transfer between Bacteria and Nanowire Electrode
초록  Microbial electrocatalysis where microbes which can make extracellular electron transfer and catalyze chemical reaction at electrodes have a great attention. Its application ranges from bioelectricity production via microbial fuel cells (MFC) to value added chemical production via microbial electrosynthesis (MES). These microbial bioelectrochemical systems can be further aided when coupled with functional nanostructure electrodes, such as nanowires as they can control bacterial interaction or directly transfer electrons converted from sunlight to bacteria. However, understanding of charge transfer mechanism of individual bacterium in such a nanoscopic environment is lacking. Rather conventional studies were limited to the average effect of large population of bacteria and macroscopic environment and thus suffer from the convoluted effect of dead/living cells and complicated mass and charge transport of extracellular matrix that surrounds bacteria. Here we develop the single level bacteria - nanowire current measurement platform where in-situ optical imaging correlates the movement of bacteria. The charge transfer of Geobacter Sulfurreducens, widely used electroactive microorganisms, is investigated as a model system. Direct femtoamp level charge transfer between Geobacter Sulfurreducens and nanowires is discovered by correlating to bacterial movement near nanowire. We also found that charge from remote bacteria can transport via preexisting bacteria-to-bacteria connection to nanowires while freshly formed bacteria-to-bacteria connection does not support such transport. The findings of charge transfer mechanism of individual bacterium and inter bacterial connection will provide in-depth understanding of fundamental information from individual bacterial cells and aid design of efficient microbial bioelectrochemical systems.
