Enhanced adsorption properties of activated carbon fibers using fluorination for removal of acetic acid gas |

Fluorination is used to improve an adsorption performance of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) to acetic acid gas. Two different methods are used to fluorinate ACFs: direct gas fluorination and plasma fluorination. The effect of fluorination on the adsorption performance is analyzed using gas chromatography. A breakthrough time of plasma-fluorinated ACFs for acetic acid adsorption is 790 min, whereas that of raw ACFs is 650 min. It is determined that the adsorption performance of plasma-fluorinated ACFs is enhanced due to an increased electrostatic attraction between acetic acid and fluorine functional groups of the fluorinated ACFs without notable change in specific surface area. Breakthrough time of acetic acid adsorption, however, decreases to 390 min after direct fluorination. The decrease in the adsorption performance of direct gas fluorinated ACFs is caused by the significant reduction of specific surface area to 55%. |
