Dual function of SiO2/TiO2 hollow nanoparticles decorated with size controlled Ag nanoparticles (Ag@HNPs) were synthesized using sol-gel reaction and chemical reduction to increase light scattering and enhance visible light absorption in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The size of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) significantly influences on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The SiO2/TiO2 HNPs mainly improved the light absorption at long wavelengths, whereas LSPR of large size (ca. 15 nm) increased the light absorption at short wavelengths, leading to absorption of full solar spectrum. As a result, power conversion efficiency (PCE) of Ag@HNPs based DSSCs increased from 7.1% to 9.0% compared with only TiO2 (ca. 20 nm) based DSSCs, which is about 27% enhancement by light scattering and LSPR. |
