Star polymer is a branched polymer characterized by multiple linear chains linked to a central core. The unique chain architecture of star polymers imparts interesting physical properties depending on the molecular parameters such as the number of arms, molecular weight and polydispersity. Usually, star polymers are characterized by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). However, it cannot characterize star polymers precisely since it is often hard to resolve side products and it remains as a challenging task to prepare uniform star polymers. In this study, we described an efficient approach for a synthesis of 4-arm star polymers using a tetravalent 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE) as an initiator or a linker. We characterized the 4-arm star polybutadiene precisely by SEC and temperature gradient interaction chromatography (TGIC). |
