Photocurrent Enhancement Using Three-Dimensional Interpenetrating Polythiophene Nanowires in Organic Solar Cells |

The influence of micrometer-scale poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) nanowires (NWs) on the photocurrent generation in photoactive layers having various thickness values was investigated. Self-organizing P3HT NWs a maximum of 5 μm in length were fabricated using a marginal solvent. These NWs were much longer than the entire thickness of the photoactive layer prepared for use in an organic solar cell. Transmission electron microtomography was used to characterize the vertical and horizontal crystalline morphologies of the NWs and their intergrain percolation networks in the active layers. The photovoltaic performances and internal quantum efficiencies of the solar devices prepared with active layers having NWs did not decrease up to 600 nm as the photoactive layer thickness increased, suggesting that the conversion of absorbed photons into a photocurrent proceeded efficiently. |
