The dimerization reaction of tetrafluoroethylene (C2F4, TFE) was carried out for octafluorocyclobutane (C4F8, RC318). In order to control the reaction temperature for an exothermic dimerization of TFE, the fluidized bed reactor with the nozzle for steam feeding was employed. The operating conditions were established by the preliminary experiments in a fluidized cold bed reactor and a tubular reactor. The dimerization reactoin was carried out in the temperature range of 470∼590℃, the mole ratio of TFE/H2O 0.5∼3 and contact time 0.8∼3.5sec. RC318 was mainly produced with a little amount of by-products such as Hexafluoropropylene, Trifluoroethylene (CF2=CHF, TrFE), Pentafluoroethylene (CHF2CF3, R125), Chlorotrifluoropentane (CF2=CFCl, CTFE). It was found that the conversion of TFE and the selectivity of RC318 were greatly affected by the temperature and the contact time. The selectivity of HFP in the dimerization of TFE greatly increased by feeding steam in a fluidized bed reactor. It was found that the formation of coke and solid polymer in a fluidized bed reactor was more restricted than a tubular reactor system.
