The topochemical polymerization of diacetylenes by irradiation or thermal annealing has been widely used for preparing ordered macromolecules. And, discotic liquid crystals(DLC) build up high ordered structures in thermotropic systems. Our objective have been focused on synthesizing polymerizable discotic liquid crystals formed by hydrogen bonding and polymerization of this polymerizable discotic liquid crystals. Our strategy to obtain the DLC is to use hydrogen bonding between the core molecule (H-bond donor) and the peripheral groups (H-bond acceptor). 1,3,5-Trihydroxybenzene (phloroglucinol, PG) was used as the core molecules. 4-(4-alkoxyphenyl)pyridine, which alkoxy group have polymerizable functionality (diacetylene), for peripheral group. The existence of the hydrogen-bonded complexes was studied by FT-IR spectroscopy. After polymerization,The mesomorphic properties of complexes and characteristics were investigated by DSC, POM and X-ray diffraction.
