Arsenic is one of the most toxic elements and its contamination is widespread around the world. The identification of adsorbents having high selectivity and efficiency towards the contaminants is important in wastewater treatment technology. In this study, zirconium intercalated mesoporous synthetic hectorite was synthesized by hydrothermal crystallization of gels containing silica, magnesium hydroxide and lithium fluoride. The zirconium loaded synthetic clay was employed for the removal of arsenate from aqueous solution. The material were fully characterized with the help of Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET surface area; X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses. The sorption data were collected to study the effect of pH, initial As(V) concentration, and contact time. Moreover, the influences of background electrolyte concentrations as well as presence of co-existing ions on the removal of As(V) were also evaluated. |
