The polynorbornenes with side-chain PCBM groups were efficiently produced by the vinyl addition homo- and co-polymerization of norbornene monomer functionalized with PCBM moiety using Pd(II) catalyst in combination with 1-octene chain transfer agent. Characterization by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis revealed that the copolymers constitute a well-defined polymer structure with controlled incorporation of monomer. While the homopolymer is insoluble in organic solvents, the copolymers containing 62 mol-% and 50 mol-% of PCBM moiety are soluble in chlorinated solvents such as ODCB. The bulk-heterojunction OPV devices fabricated based on the P3HT:Polynorbornene blends show that polynorbornenes can adequately function as an electron acceptor, leading to a cell with PCE of 1.5%, which is outstanding among the polymeric rivals. Details of synthesis, characterization, and device performances of polymer will be discussed. |
