Preparation of PMMA-containing copolymer microcapsules with a photochromic dye for smart window |

As a preliminary work to fabricating smart window based on PMMA, we prepared poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microcapsules containing spiropyran as photochromic dye with the cross-linked PMMA shell in order to enhance the switching speed of the dye. The Tg of matrix was controlled by copolymerizing butyl acrylate (BA) into MMA. Copolymer was buk-polymerized using BPO as an initiator. The core was mixed with a dye in a CH2Cl2 and then evaporated. The resultant microspheres were seed-polymerized with MMA and Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate mixture. After freeze-drying, the microcapsules containing a photochromic dye were obtained. The morphology and the size of microcapsules were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and particle size analyzer, respectively. The kinetics of decoloration of the microcapsules were quantified by fitting biexponential equation to the decay curve of optical absorbance versus delay time after irradiation. |
