Synthesis of Novel Poly(NDPPA-co-NIPAM)s and Their Sol-Gel Phase Transition Behaviors |

New N-substituted acrylamide monomers (m-NDPPA and p-NDPPA) having benzene ring and long alkyl chains were synthesized. The resulting homopolymer and copolymers (NDPPA/NIPAM and NDPPA/NIPAM) with number average molecular weights of 7.600~14,800 were prepared by a radical chain polymerization. The polymers exhibited a sol-gel phase transition behavior with temperature in hydrophobic solvents such as benzene and toluene. The phase transition temperature was dependent not only on the composition ratio of the new monomer in the copolymer but also on the kind of solvent. The temperature dependent sol-gel transition behavior was confirmed by a dynamic light scattering method.
