Graphene, a new material with two-dimensional nanostructure consisting of a single layer of sp2 network of carbon atoms, has demonstrated unique properties, such as low resistivity, high chemical stability, and excellent mechanical strength. However, it is difficult to homogeneously disperse graphene or graphene oxide (GO) in organic solvents, which critically limits practical applications. Thus, a number of functionalization method have been suggested to improve solubility of graphene or GO in organic solvent. In this study, we report a new facile functionalization method of graphene oxide. Hydrophilic groups, such as carboxyl acid, hydroxyl, epoxy in GO, are easily and efficiently substituted by alkyl groups in one step reaction. The chemical structure and the amount of functionalization in functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) are identified by FT-IR and XPS analysis, and solubility of FGO in various organic solvents is examined. |
