Enhanced osteoblast response to a poly (methyl methacrylate)/hydroxyapatite electrospun nanocomposite for bone tissue engineering |

Hydroxyapatite (HA)-containing polymers have been proposed as candidates for improving the biological properties of bone cements. Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has long been used to secure orthopedic implants to the skeletal bones. The aim of this study was to determine whether the incorporation of HA nanoparticles in PMMA nanofibrous scaffolds enhance the biological functions of osteoblasts. The proliferation of osteoblasts on PMMA/HA nanofibrous scaffolds was significantly higher than PMMA alone. The cytoskeletal organization and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of the osteoblasts on PMMA/HA nanofibrous scaffolds were clearly higher than the PMMA control. These results indicate that the incorporation of HA in the PMMA nanofibrous scaffolds improved the biological response of osteoblasts. Therefore, the incorporation of HA in the PMMA matrix could be a useful method in providing PMMA scaffolds with enhanced osteogenic properties. |
