In-situ Localization of Small Molecules in Crosslinked Particles during Electrospraying: Simple Route to Produce Microcapsules with Controlled Release |

A mixture solution consisting of poly(caprolactone), crosslinked polymer particles, and dye molecules was electrosprayed to prepare uniform-sized microcapsules. The X-linked PMMA particles compatible with the condensed PCL solution were randomly distributed in the PCL microspheres, while the incompatible X-linked PNIPAm hydrogel particles were concentrated in the center of the microspheres. The dye molecules were phase separated from the crystallized polymer chains during the electrospraying and moved to the solvent-rich crosslinked polymer particles. The in-situ rearrangement of the dye molecules enabled the formation of microcapsules through the single-nozzle electrospraying. The microcapsules did not show the initial burst release of the dye molecules and had considerably prolonged release behavior compared with the no crosslinked particles inside. The concept could be applied to produce fibers by electrospinning a particle-containing polymer solution. |
