Utilization of Biopolymer from Plant via Sustainable and Practicable Process |

Biopolymer in plant is a natural and renewable alternative for petroleum-based polymer. Unfortunately, the major valuable components that include polysaccharides and lignin are chemically linked in a complex manner so that their efficient separation has remained a difficult challenge. In this presentation, we report a sustainable yet effective method for the extraction of these compounds by the combined wet-type ultrafine comminution and enzymatic saccharification of plant (10 wt%) at 50 °C for 4 h. The ultrafine comminution generates particles at the nanoscale order, thus exposing the biopolymers in plant cell wall. This allows enzymes to directly access and to convert 69% of polysaccharides to sugars while efficiently separating the micronized lignin. Furthermore, close to 100% alcohol bioconversion of the generated sugars is achieved. Non-denatured lignin can be recovered as a glassy and transparent film that exhibits various unique properties such as flame/solvent-resistance. |
