PVDF has several advantages over the other support membrane materials, but its hydrophobicity limited its use as a support for PA TFC membrane fabrication via interfacial polymerization of MPD with TMC. Since MPD in water phase was not effectively coated on solid PVDF support surface, MPD was dissolved in coagulant for PVDF support membrane formation via NIPS process. MPD was in-situ impregnated into PVDF matrix, and could be reacted with TMC in n-hexane phase. DMF or NMP was used as solvent for PVDF, which affected the top surface morphology of support membrane and formation of active layer on it. Higher MPD concentration was required for in-situ process than that for conventional process. PA/PVDF TFC membrane showed enhanced performance than that of conventional process. Inorganic additives were tested to improve membrane performance. The TFC composite membrane characterizations were performed such as ATR, XPS, SEM, TEM, AFM, flux and rejection test. |
