Synthesis of diurethane via condensation of methyl N-phenyl carbamate over tungstophosphoric acid (H3PW12O40) supported on montmorillonite K30 |

Methylene diphenyl 4,4’-dicarbamate is an important precursor for producing methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), which is known as an essential monomer for manufacturing polyurethane. MDI has been conventionally produced via a reaction of aromatic diamines with highly toxic phosgene. Accordingly, there have been enormous efforts for the production of MDI via phosgene-free way. One of the promising approaches is the synthesis of MDI via pyrolysis of MDC, which is produced by the condensation of methyl N-phenyl carbamate (MPC) with formaldehyde. In this study, H3PW12O40 (TPA) supported on montmorillonite K30 catalyst was found to be an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for producing MDC via the condensation of MPC. The highest yield of MDC is 75.5% with 94% selectivity using 30 wt.% TPA/K30 under mild condition at 90 °C for 4 h. The catalytic activity of TPA/K30 is well correlated with their Brønsted and Lewis acidity, which were analyzed by pyridine IR and NH3-TPD measurements. |
