A light-responsive programmed chiral dendrimer containing photochromic azobenzene moieties covalently connected to a bicyclic chiral core (abbreviated as PABC) was newly designed and efficiently applied as a remote-controllable molecular knob for the photo-responsive liquid crystal (LC) devices. The PABC molecule basically formed a low-ordered chiral smectic A (SmA*) phase with the 5.61 nm layer periodicity and high-ordered smectic crystalline (SmCr1 and SmCr2) phases with the anticlinically-tilting arrangement. Furthermore, chiral nematic (N*) and blue LC (BP) phase can be constructed by addition of PABC as the chiral dopant into the achiral nematic host. Remote-controllable phase transformations in the Sm*, N* and BP were demonstrated by tuning the wavelength of light.
