Bioethanol is an attractive alternative and renewable biofuel which can be distilled from plant fermentation broths. Although most of the water is removed by distillation, the purity of ethanol is limited to 95-96% due to the formation of a low-boiling point, water-ethanol azeotrope. Therefore, this study was developed to purify bioethanol using ionic liquids as additives in distillation. The ionic liquid, [OMIM][BF4] as an additive, had the best effect on distillation of ethanol-water mixtures. Under 1 g of [OMIM][BF4], 20 mL of 99.4 % (ethanol, v:v) aqueous solution was distillated from100 mL of 20.0 % (ethanol, v:v) ethanol-water mixtures. This method was simple and could purify the bioethanol at low boil temperature of 64 ℃.
