Ferrogels have been used as a potential vehicle for delivery of drug, protein and cell, as release behavior of the loaded cargo from the gels can be controlled in response to magnetic field on demand. However, water-soluble drug or protein is very quickly released from conventional alginate ferrogels. In this study, alginate was modified with heparin to achieve the sustained release of transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1), and ferrogels were prepared by ionic cross-linking with calcium ions in the presence of iron oxide nanoparticles. The controlled release of TGF-beta1 from alginate-based ferrogels was achieved for an extended time period in vitro under the application of magnetic field, compared with conventional alginate ferrogels. |
