Two types of photochromic diarylethene copolymers, random and block copolymers, with narrow molecular weight dispersity (P.D.〈1.5) were synthesized via TEMPO-mediated polymerization method. A styrenic type of 1-[6'-(4'''-vinylbenzoyl)-2'-methylbenzo[b]- thiophene-3'-yl]-2-(2"-methylbenzo[b]thiophene-3"-yl)hexafluorocyclopentene(VBMBTF6) was successfully polymerized in the presence of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxy derivatives as an initiator. High content of diarylethene could be introduced in the polymer up to 25 mol%. Large photo-induced refractive index change of 0.01 (830nm) could be obtained from the diarylethene copolymer films. Photochromic characteristics and application potential of random and block diarylethene copolymers will be presented.
