Pervaporative separation of ethanol using a hydrophobic hollow fiber membrane from model solutions and fermentation broth |

In this study, a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) hollow fiber membrane was examined for the pervaporative separation of bioethanol from the fermentation of glucose. The pervaporation of the synthetic ethanol-water mixtures with a wide concentration range was carried out as a preliminary experiment. The influence of operating conditions (temperature and ethanol in feed) on the pervaporation performance showed that the ethanol flux had a strong dependence. In addition, the pervaporative separation of bioethanol produced through fermentation of glucose using Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed that the pervaporative separation of bioethanol using a hydrophobic membrane could be operated without any significant limitation. |
