Peroxalate copolymer nanoparticles for biomedical applications |

Vanillin alcohol (VA) or hydroxybenzyl alcohol (HBA) is one of active pharmaceutical ingredients of Gastrodia elata, which has been a widely used herbal agent for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases. We have developed new biodegradable and anti-inflammatory peroxalate copolymers in which VA or HBA was incorporated into their backbone. The copolyoxalate was designed to release antioxidant and anti-inflammatory VA or HBA during hydrolytic degradation. Copolyoxalate was formulated into nanoparticles with an average diameter of 500 nm by a single emulsion method. VA or HBA-incorporated copolyoxalate scavenged hydrogen peroxide and inhibit the production of nitric oxide by suppressing the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase in lipopolysaccharide-activated macrophages. The nanoparticles also inhibited the production of tumor necrosis factor-alph . We anticipate that HPOX is highly potent and versatile for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. |
