Poly(2-cyano-1,4-phenylene terephthalamide) (cyPPTA) as an aromatic polyamide containing cyano side group is found to have excellent thermal, chemical and mechanical properties, in addition to facile processibility using organic solvents. It is thus considered as a polymeric material for high performance fibers and films. Recently, carbon nanotubes and their derivatives are adopted as ideal reinforcing nanofillers for polymeric materials, owing to their superior tensile modulus, strength, electrical conductivity, thermal stability, as well as large surface area and aspect ratio. In order to provide new functionality and improved property to cyPPTA, we have fabricated a series of nanocomposite films based on multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and cyPPTA via an efficient solution-mixing and -casting method, and have investigated their microstructure, thermal stability, electrical resistivity, and mechanical performance as a function of the MWCNT content. |
