Enhanced device performances are reported for OPVs incorporating a solution-processed insulating polymer layer hybridized with metal oxide nanoparticles as a cathode interfacial layer. OPVs based on the poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) : [6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blends with the composite interlayer exhibited excellent performance with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 4.4% compared to that of conventional device. This improved device performance is attributed to an improved polymer/metal contact, efficient electron extraction and better hole blocking properties. More importantly, the composite layer serves as an optical spacer, and thereby increases the photocurrent significantly. The simplicity in the deposition of solution-processed insertion layer along with its excellent characterstics suggests the possibility of high performance printed organic photovoltaics. |
